I became a flight instructor before I went into WASP. I took a primary
refresher course for flight instruction at Buffalo Aeronautical. I had
previously gotten my commercial license. And the primary instructor's training
was to teach pilots who wanted to join the Army. And after that I went and got
my secondary instructor's rating which was to teach acrobatics to Army pilots.
And that was where I got a telegram from Wilmington, Delaware, from General
Arnold, to report to Newcastle Army Air Base at my own expense, for a flight
test to see if they could use me. So I thought about that maybe 30 minutes and
decided to hop a train and go to Wilmington, Delaware, where I met Nancy Love.
And they gave me a flight test. And that's how I got into the WASP program.|
