Well, he had the same obsession to disprove spiritualism that atheists have in arguing that God doesn’t exist. There’s a little too much protest there. And one would think, on the basis of his determination to wipe out the entire profession of mediums and spiritualists and people who ran seances, that he was very vulnerable to its appeal and wanted possibly, after all the frauds were wiped away, to see that there might be some element of possibility there that would allow him to think that he could be immortal, which is of course what he always wanted to be.
