Little Mac's Union Squeeze

"Little Mac's Union Squeeze"

"At this moment we find ourselves in the face of superior forces wherever we look, whether to the North, the East, or the West, or the South itself. Generals Joseph Johnston and Beauregard are held by McClellan on the Potomac as in a vice." -- Richmond Examiner, Jan. 16.

A cartoon from the Richmond Examiner, reprinted in the Harper's Weekly of February 8, 1862, portrays General George McClellan as a giant snake, putting the squeeze on the Confederates. In late January, Lincoln had issued his General War Order No. 1, calling for an immediate Union mobilization before February 22nd. This order reflected Lincoln's frustration with McClellan, who had been slow to launch an attack.
