Mary Todd grew up steeped in politics, in her family's Lexington home. She later considered herself Lincoln's political advisor, visited convalescing soldiers during the war, and aided runaway slaves with friend and former-slave Elizabeth Keckley. But she was not alone. Women on both sides of the war made immense contributions in medical, political, literary, and domestic arenas.
