PERRET: Terrible president. MacArthur would have made a terrible president.
He would have failed spectacularly. A president has to negotiate all of the
time. MacArthur was only capable of negotiating some of the time. The
president has to be able to make deals with people. With all kinds of people
over all kinds of issues. MacArthur was not a deal making kind of guy. He
just couldn't have handled the political side of being president. The
leadership role, the statesman role, which is really the way he saw it, that,
he could have done. But the down to earth nitty gritty problems that come
across the president's desk everyday, most of them would have driven him wild.
He would have seen them as being petty and irritating and distracting.
