The Korean War


Korean Maps Less than five years after the Japanese surrender and the end of World War II, what was essentially a civil war in Korea became the focus of the intense global rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States. With tensions already running high in Europe, the Truman administration was extremely wary of entangling itself in Asia, where Mao's Communists had gained control of mainland China by 1949. When Secretary of State Dean Acheson indicated in January 1950 that Korea lay outside the vital U.S. defense perimeter, giving the signal that we would not defend South Korea if the North attacked, the stage had been set -- the Cold War was about to turn hot...
