February American forces take Guadalcanal.
March Battle of the Bismarck Sea: Americans sink eight Japanese transports and four destroyers bound for New Guinea.
Manhattan Project begins.
June Americans retake Aleutian Islands.
July Battle of New Georgia: American army and marine forces attack main Japanese base in the Solomon Islands.
August Allies take New Georgia and Vella Lavella, also in the Solomons, where they establish a major base.
November American marines attack Bougainville in the Solomon Islands.
American troops attack the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, sustaining heavy losses -- 3,000 dead to capture three square miles.
December Allied troops assault New Britain.
