Growing up in Milwaukee, Simon was a fan of sandlot baseball and the public library's science department. Inspired by an economist uncle, he entered college determined to bring mathematical rigor to the social sciences. He was singled out by the Nobel committee for his studies of the decision-making process within economic organizations, for which he pioneered the use of computer simulations.
