The fact that women had a method that allowed them to be free of pregnancy and to make decisions on their own had a profound effect on how we began to think about all sorts of things, about being able to continue a career without fear of interruption. In fact I remember clearly looking for a job when my children were one and two, and this was pre-pill, and I remember being asked on the telephone before I even got an interview, did I have children, and how old were they? And when I said yes I have children one and two, they hung up the phone, end of interview. So the fact that now with the pill I could say yes, I have children who are three and four, suddenly it was different, because people knew, employers knew that women could now be reliable workers and they wouldn't have absenteeism because of more children.
