Tens of thousands of workers built the Trans-Alaska pipeline, enduring Alaska's brutal winters and challenging terrain.
Structural specialists figured out how to get the pipe over mountain passes, raging rivers, earthquake-prone areas, and permafrost. Heavy machine operators prepared the route and dragged massive pipeline segments into place. Pipe welders fused each segment together, and engineers followed to check the completed welds with X-rays.
