The North Carolina State Capitol building in Raleigh was built in 1840. The project cost more than three times the state's annual general income at the time.

The production crew filmed scenes of the Georgia state legislature inside the Capitol building, including a scene of a whisky party legislators held in 1867.

One of the pleasures of this job is you get to learn all the time. When you begin to understand what happened in Reconstruction, and how important it was to the evolution of race, and race relations in this country, it was just really a subject I wanted to do. -- Elizabeth Deane, series producer
