Virginia Utermohlen on: The Film About Binns
Virginia Utermohlen Q: Tell me the story about Vitagraph making a film about Binns and how he reacted?

VU: Vitagraph, which was one of the early newsreel companies, made a film about him and actually, it was a very short film which purported to show him at his ticker, on the sending key, and gave a very short, quick history of the event with supposedly pictures of him at the key. This upset him terribly because, in fact, he viewed that as an invasion of his privacy, as something he had not authorized and something he had certainly not wanted to be shown in that fashion. And so he sued Vitagraph and won the suit for invasion of privacy. I don't think, in this day and age, this would be ever possible to win such a suit given the kind of freedom of speech that we have nowadays.
