Rockefellers' Mark on America

Rockefellers' Mark on AmericaThe Rockefellers didn’t invent philanthropy, but their contributions have enriched millions of people’s lives. By donating money on a colossal scale, they built an enduring family legacy in the arts, natural resource conservation, education, medicine, and religion.

John D. Rockefeller's charitable contributions added up to $540 million (in the dollars of his time). His $32 million gift in 1907 to the General Education Board, for the promotion of education without the distinction of race, sex, or creed, would be the equivalent of $640 million in 1999 dollars. The charitable gifts of John D. Rockefeller Jr. are estimated to have totaled $537 million. This map provides a look at a few of the vast number of beneficiaries.
