Match Race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti at Del Mar, California
August 12, 1938

The match race that pitted Seabiscuit against Ligaroti was also a contest between father and son. Charles Howard's son Lin owned Ligaroti and was instrumental in setting up the one-on-one race for the newly opened track at Del Mar. Ligaroti's co-owner, singer Bing Crosby, was a founder of the racetrack, and he penned the words to its big band theme song, "Where the Turf Meets the Surf."
