We went to homecoming in 1964 and the guest entertainer was Bob Hope. And Bob Hope did a little patter, a little schtick, and then he went off on a digression about the war in Vietnam and how it was important to win the war in Vietnam because if we didn't win in Vietnam, if we didn't defeat the Communists in Vietnam we were going to be fighting the Communists in Lodi and this got a huge round of applause, an eruption of applause and cheers.
Lodi is a little farming community near Madison and I remember Susan and I turning to each other and looking at each other and thinking, "We are in the wrong place," because we were both already opposed to the war in Vietnam and we weren't going to applaud a pro-war statement, especially at the homecoming entertainment.
