The first time I recall coming to was in the hospital, I think it's even before you get to the evac. The helicopter would have lifted me out of the NDP and brought me to something, perhaps at Lai Khe, there's a record somewhere but I destroyed my records so I could get back to the fight there. So I don't know where I went originally, but I was brought somewhere and I know that I remember waking up on a table. The first coherent thought I had [was] that I was on a table and I was completely naked and I was clean where before I'd been filthy, filthy dirty and bloody. And I was clean and I was white from top to bottom and it was something I hadn't seen for a long time, just a straight shot of white laying on a table. And a beautiful woman, the nurse -- I don't know who she was, she could have been a 90-year-old ugly girl I guess -- a beautiful woman was leaning over me and saying, "Lieutenant Welch, it's going to be all right. You're going to be all right."
