Lon Nol The former defense minister of Cambodia, Lon Nol, orchestrated the coup that toppled Prince Norodom Sihanouk in 1970. Following Sihanouk's exit, U.S. and South Vietnamese forces freely entered Cambodia in their pursuit of Communist fighting units.
