If there's one image of George Wallace that sticks out foremost in the
public's mind, it's most likely that of him standing in a doorway at the University of Alabama, barring the
way to the school's integration.
But the governor's view toward Alabama's black population transformed
in the years that followed, from fierce segregationist to civil-rights
supporter. Or did it?
