Harry Oosahwee, Cherokee language instructor at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma, talks about the importance of using the Cherokee language in Trail of Tears. On the set, Oosahwee worked with actors like Wes Studi, who were raised speaking Cherokee, as well as with actors who had never spoken Cherokee. “I sat down with them and worked with them several times before scenes, so they could get their lines together,” he says. “I’m happy to say that all of them did really well -- 100 percent as far as their actual knowledge of the language.”
