  Mini-Activity: Shear the Deck
Activites Index | Glossary Educator Support

Definition Shear A force that causes one part of a material to slide past another.

Illustration: cards in a cantilever. Place a deck of cards on a table. Invite a kid to push sideways on the top part of the deck so the cards "smear" sideways, demonstrating the sliding action of shear force. Shearing stress on two parts of a structure that are bolted or nailed together can break the bolts or nails in two.
