Definition Compression A pressing force that squeezes a material together.


Illustration: two pairs of hands, pressing against each other. Have pairs of kids place their palms together and gradually lean in toward each other. Ask them to describe how their arms feel (squeezed or pushed together). Columns and bridge piers are examples of parts of structures that are in compression.
