"The opening scene of Gormenghast [draws] one into its magical world as irresistibly as 'Once upon a time'.... Everything about it looks and sounds sumptuous...This is a production that brings us the experimentation, the element of make believe, and the fantasy that once made viewing a release from the ordinary...
-- Peter Paterson in The Daily Mail
The creation of Gormenghast takes matters into another dimension... It is an indication of the power of this amazing dramatisation that much of Peake's preoccupation, with what might and might not be mad, streams off the screen. Some may find this unsettling, but then many of us find Grimm's fairy tales and King Lear unsettling, too. Gormenghast occupies a parallel universe close to them. Watch it.
