Up, Up, and How Far Away?

Big News! You just heard on the radio that the Virgin Global Challenger balloon is going to land in your town. You look outside, and sure enough, there's the balloon approaching in the distance.

The balloon will land in a matter of minutes, and you want to be the first to greet the crew when they touch ground. But how far away is it? You better figure it out fast so you can decide if you should run, bike or drive to the landing spot.

Luckily, with your thumb, your arm, and a little know-how, you can estimate how far away the balloon is.
