The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is the tomb of King Maussollos, ruler of Caria
from 377-353 b.c. The Mausoleum was adorned with many statues and carvings of people
and animals, including horses, lions, and a leopard. Battle scenes were also depicted.
Built for him by his wife Artemisia (who was also his
sister), this structure was so enormous for its day that it amazed everyone who
saw it. In fact, King Maussollos' tomb made such an impression, that, to this
day, the term Mausoleum refers to any large constructed tomb. The tomb's blocks
were used to fortify nearby Bodrum Castle, and by 1522, the mausoleum had been
completely dissembled.
