The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is the tomb of King Maussollos, ruler of Caria from 377-353 b.c. The Mausoleum was adorned with many statues and carvings of people and animals, including horses, lions, and a leopard. Battle scenes were also depicted. Built for him by his wife Artemisia (who was also his sister), this structure was so enormous for its day that it amazed everyone who saw it. In fact, King Maussollos' tomb made such an impression, that, to this day, the term Mausoleum refers to any large constructed tomb. The tomb's blocks were used to fortify nearby Bodrum Castle, and by 1522, the mausoleum had been completely dissembled.
