Program Overview

In the science fiction thriller Jurassic Park, scientists clone
dinosaurs from ancient DNA in order to make them the main attraction
at an amusement park. In this episode of NOVA, a team of researchers
sets out to discover whether the technology presented in Jurassic
Park actually exists. Their investigation raises another set of
questions, related to the ethics of using such technology.
Drawing on interviews with paleontologists and biologists, NOVA
explores the feasibility of each step: extracting dinosaur DNA,
making a dinosaur cell, hatching an egg, raising baby dinosaurs,
designing an appropriate habitat, and creating a stable population.
The program ends with a discussion of the ethical implications of
using scientific knowledge to regenerate extinct species. Even if
cloning dinosaurs is technically feasible, is it morally right?
