Program Overview

Russian jets are built to be tough and to operate with a minimum of
maintenance. They can function in less-than-ideal conditions, such as open
roads or dirt fields, and take off without much work. U.S. jets, on the other
hand, are finely tuned electronic flying machines. Landing them in
less-than-ideal conditions could lead to disastrous results. But what they lack
in survivability they make up in onboard technology—sophisticated computers
give them the edge in radar and missile guidance systems. Through a series of
interviews with pilots, explanations of different training philosophies, and
demonstrations of the aircraft, this NOVA program explores the differences and
similarities between Russian and U.S. airpower.
