Mir-Hossein Mousavi 'ready for martyrdom' as Iranians defy Supreme Leader Iran's

By Angus McDowall

Published: 6:12PM BST 20 Jun 2009

He dramatically raised the stakes in the standoff with Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after publishing a letter to the country's highest electoral authority in which he cited examples of electoral fraud to support his "undeniable right" to call for a re-run of the election.

Mr Mousavi made his defiant call during a speech delivered in southwest Tehran, according to an ally, who telephoned a

western news agency shortly afterwards to report: "Mousavi said he was ready for martyrdom and that he would continue his path."

A witness told Reuters that Mr Mousavi had called for a national strike if he was arrested.

It was an unprecedented act in defiance of Ayatollah Khamenei, who has declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner of the June 12 election and on Friday ordered an end to protests by demonstrators who say Mousavi was the winner.

It came as a few thousand protesters defied threats of bloodshed from Iran's rulers and attempted to march through central Tehran - only to be beaten back by riot police. Heavily armed police and militia flooded the streets and used tear gas and batons to attack them. read

WHERE IS THE HELP FROM THE USA FOR THESE PEOPLE? IS OBAMA A CHICKEN? USA HELP THEM USA HELP THEM USA HELP THEM...OBAMA WHERE ARE YOU?

carpus / June 20, 2009 3:46 PM

i AM CUBAN AND I FEEL THE IRAN PAIN,WE HAVE SUFFERED FOR 50 YEARS AND THE US FORGOT ABOUT US.

I HOPE IS DIFFERENT FOR THE IRANIANS

WE NEED TO RID OF THE WORLD TYRANTS

RICK D / June 20, 2009 4:59 PM

If Obama makes any mention to help Iran, IRG attacks would explode. As it is, the regime has no cause to attack people, yet bullets are thrown around like candy. Imagine if they could accuse people of siding with the enemy... wow. I can't imagine the disastrous situation then.

carpediem / June 20, 2009 6:12 PM

USA already has a bad record in Iran, overthrowing a democratically elected President in favor of the Shaw. US stay out now. Helen, USA

Helen / June 20, 2009 6:14 PM

I am very impressed with Tehran Bureau. Clearly it offers a wide window into the ongoing struggles, clashes, and political rhetoric of one of the most dramatic stories of the year. How this upsurge of dissidence in Iran will end would appear to be anyone's guess. Thanks to Tehran Bureau, however, the world can indeed watch. And the eyes of the world being focussed upon Iran will in and of itself spur the quest for greater freedoms and for the people's voices to be heard--and, finally, heeded. are u kidding take care of your own problems we are in up to our eyeballs in enough crap we can hardly take care of our problems. And thats all we need more western hate everywere we go. and if we do intervine then it won't be to their likeing and so the US is damned if they do damned if they don't. It is someones elses turn.

USA / June 20, 2009 7:46 PM

Do not ask where the USA is? We are here. . . The United States is a powerful country but what gives us the only power in the world to step in and help? Where is the United Nations? Where are the other powerful countries in the world? Revolution is on the brink for Iran. Who helped with the Russian Revolution? Mexican Revolution? the American Revolution? Obama is being smart by not making the same mistakes that Bush made. The United States is not the ONLY country in the world- and our beliefs on government are not the ONLY correct beliefs in the world. We do not need to be hated for getting involved- because all that happens is that we are hated for actually getting involved.

USA / June 20, 2009 10:19 PM

Obama? Geez, we gullible Americans practically voted in a dictator ourselves! What were we thinking?! We better hope we've cleared our heads by 2012 and vote him OUT!

Think twice...why do you suppose he's really trying to stay out of the Iranian situation? HUH? It seems clear to me.

On the other hand, although I hope and pray Iranians gain their freedom, I do agree that it's someone else's turn to play world police. No one likes us when we get involved and no one likes us when we don't get involved. It makes many Americans say "enough is enough"...don't help anyone anymore. Many countries have just stuck their tongues out at us when we've been giving and helpful rather than say 'thanks'.

Vicki / June 21, 2009 2:05 AM

Carpus, you're a fool! If the U.S. intervenes, it would only justify Khamenei and his cronies' claims that this was an attempt by the U.S. to undermine Iran. You're a typical idiot who likes to think that the U.S. can solve all the world's problems. The only ones that can directly aid their cause is the Iranian nation itself and their political leaders. The rest of the world can only support them by watching and acknowledging their struggle from afar, with intervention only an option at the most extreme circumstance, i.e. a revolution (this is still just a protest).

Christian / June 21, 2009 2:13 AM

I absolutely agree with our need to help the protestors.

This is terrible!

Obama, you stupid idiot! get off your a** and do something!

Iranians, Persians. Don't just get beaten, FIGHT BACK!

Ralph M Bohm / June 21, 2009 4:28 AM

Many in Israel are reading Tehran Bureau, many of my friends. Like all people in the world we are watching what will happen. Supporting the protests and wishing for peace between our people. Persia and Jewish people have long history of good relations and alliance in Middle East.

Dovid / June 21, 2009 5:05 AM

The hierarchy involved in the govt of Tehran is such, the president is only 1 small part of the chain. Yet people are willing to get hurt or die to make the change with a candidate who is no revolutionary himself. People don't get into harms' way because of some other countries' TV news. Supreme Leader (if he is truly religious) must calm the crowds with talks between the leaders and exam the situation / voting / process. USA as a leader must lead by example. Follow the call of victims families all over the US: "We're Done - We're Done - NO MORE GUNS!"

Sam S. / June 21, 2009 9:41 AM

i am really happy that the imperialist usa is not intervening in iran.

look at irak, the situation there worsened since the intervention.

hopefulle the workingclass will overthrow the regime and insall more shoras

reza / June 21, 2009 10:58 AM

I am sending out tweets through twitter.

I am beyond words so I will just tweet to help.

Mousavi office reports that he did not attend any protests yesterday and said nothing about Martyrdom or dying or any of that. The letter is real though.

Mana / June 21, 2009 5:59 PM

Iranians must take down their theocracy. Until that happens, there will be no freedom in Iran.

Daishin / June 22, 2009 12:20 AM

Some "Obama-haters" and extreme Republicans want to goad Obama into committing the same error as George Bush. Intervene in the Internal affairs of another sovereign country. If you can swath a pesky house-fly like Obama did, you're surely smarter than some idiots think!

Why did Britain or France not intervene when USA had its own farce of an election in 2004? (Remember what happened in Florida?). Why did all the "blood-thirsty" Western media now urging Iranians to undermine and cause mayhem in their country, (for a just reason), not offer the same advice to Americans, to burn and destroy, in the name of protest over election result?

Does this call-to-arms have anything to do with the wider middle East problems viz-a-viz Israel Vs. Iran (as a counter-force to Israeli oppression of the Palestinian and Israeli Arabs (Druz)?)

Mousavi + Rasfanjani (former Presidents, what else do they want AGAIN?) are gradually exposing themselves as destabilizing Agents of the West.

Election problems should be resolved either at the electoral and constitutional court or with dialogue, as done in the USA. To behave like "internal terrorist" at the behest of some dodgy foreign media tantamounts to TREASON!

Think about it: Incite the people against their government, encourage and sponsor unrest, weaken the cohesion of the society so that it can "internally implode" (and probably give Israel a chance to bomb their fledgling nuclear facilities,) and achieve "regime-change" by installing another puppet, all in the name of democracy! Does his sound familiar?

Well, mix Peretroika + Glasnot and sauce it with Alende in Chile!

A "weakened and destabilized Iran" is a perfect recipe for the continued Genocidal occupation of Palestine lands by Israel, no wonder Israel is supporting the "GREEN struggle"!

Ordinary Iranians need to get smart and stop being used as "Canon-Fodder", pawns!

As Pres. Obama said in Cairo, Violence is not an option!

Deji S / June 22, 2009 5:35 AM

This is the most absurd piece of misunderstanding I have ever read. The revolution was not fought to turn Iran into an Islamic republic. Who do you think paved the way for Khomeini's return to Tehran? If you're looking to blame the west for something, you have plenty of material. Ladies and gentlemen! Presenting those who made the revolutionary guard possible: The USA and GREAT BRITAIN. Why don't you support your people in their desire to get this monkey off their backs. Then, if you are a devout and practicing Muslim, you can live your life and your religion in peace, and let your brothers and sisters do the same. Or do you think anyone has the right to be their brother's keeper, or their jailer? Many friends were forced to leave Iran 30 years ago after successfully overthrowing a bloody dictatorship. The Iranian people do not deserve to be kept in servitude any longer.

Gemal K / June 22, 2009 7:52 AM

Some of you have swallowed the propaganda from the government press. The USA has no desire to become involved in the struggle of the Iranian people, other than encouragement. We have learned that any time we try to help, we are thanked with "Death to USA, Hate America, etc." So find somebody else to blame. We Americans have nothing to offer but our prayers.

joan.morgan1 / June 22, 2009 1:29 PM

Both houses of the congress in the USA have passed resolutions supporting you. People here that before this uprising knew little of Iran are making proxy severs for you and doing what we can to support you.

You are showing the world the new path to journalism that cut out the paid lackeys of governments and goes straight to the people. Something Internet has been able to do for long time but need a crises like this to make it happen. I hope we are able to keep and build on your efforts to bring light to all the dark corners of the world. You are not only living and writing history but changing the way journalism is done as well. I know you have made the lone citizen a valid news source in this crisis and I hope forever in the future. You have shown the oppressed people world round they way to avoid government censorship.

As soon as the outcome is obvious Obama will be on that side. In a week the Press and Obama will be convinced he had always been supporting that side. In three weeks most of the world will believe it too.

President Obama is just a very smooth talking politician that got elected by running against Gorge Bush no matter the question asked. He is still using the same tiring methods.

As your situation develops he will be 5 or 10 days behind as the people that tell him what he thinks figure out what is the right thing for him to say, the speeches get written and learns to give them. Looking back he deals with every crisis this way.

Good luck and thank you for the new journalism we need it in this county too.

Thank you to TehranBureau for keeping the rest of the world updated! Canada is thinking of you in your time of crisis.

re: USA involvement--it is unwise to think that a country which is largely unsympathetic to the entire Iranian/Middle Eastern culture and way of life would be an appropriate choice to protect and preserve that way of life--even if they do support the democracy of Iran, they certainly have not previously acted in a way which preserves culture and belief systems. The strength is already within you, Iranians! You are capable of changing your own country--and that will always be supported!

Erin / June 23, 2009 12:33 PM

GOD helps those who help themselves. So Iranians need to wake up and take on the tyrants. Arise and Shine for the Power of the Lord GOD Almighty is with you. ISA AL-MASIH BE WITH YOU...
