Interesting video. I'm Hispanic and Catholic. I live in a very old Spanish Catholic culture and so much of what in the video, while interesting, is nothing that I've ever experienced. We have a large immigrant population coming from Mexico and Latin America, so we're seeing some of these practices and devotions but I never grew up with any of them. I think that Friar Gonzalez is right in saying that we're likely going to have a culturally diverse face. Even among Hispanic Catholic communities it's incredibly diverse.

Haha! This piece is so slanted! How is it right to glamorize the fact that people are entering America and not learning the language? Wasn’t our country founded on religious freedom? If so, then why is it that a rising population should be able to push out our own countries culture? This is the United States of American not Latin America. I don’t understand why it is commonplace in all other countries than our own, that when one moves into a new country it is imperative to learn the language and respect the culture, he/she did choose to move there. It’s your right to practice your religion as you like and to have Hispanic churches is one thing, but to say because of the Hispanics rising population the American church needs to adapt, that’s a joke! One suggestion would be for the Hispanic churches to utilize their space to offer and encourage Free English classes. Everyone needs to get over the fear of not wanting to hurt peoples “feeling” and just say it. This is a problem! Every culture other than the Hispanic since the founding of our country has learned the language with pride and was able to practice their beliefs along-side American culture rather than changing it!

Practical. Insightful. Prophetic. BUT news that has been around since I was in the seminary in San Antonio, TX in the 80s. Hopefully, we can listen with the ears of our hearts and understand the awesome opportunity and blessing our Spanish-speaking sisters and brothers are to our Church in the United States of America. As we approach Dec. 12 and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, may we all heed the care our mother still wants to lavish on us all through the disciples of her Son. Thanks for making this available...councils, catechists and clergy alike need to be aware and act. ¡Muchisimas gracias!

I agree with Tom Santa in a way... The article is very informative but the article title is quite misleading. I love my mexican brothers and sisters but I am Puerto Rican and the way this article was written and/or titled makes me feel like this has fallen into the "they're all the same" category. Nothing could be further from the truth. This should have been titled U.S. Mexican Catholics. With that said, I really enjoyed the article.

I found the presentation was informative. The needs that the U.S. Catholic Church will have to address were presented. However, the treatment makes it appear that the Mexican Catholic have the same devotional practices as those from Cuba or Puerto Rico are the same is misleading. Lets hope that the Catholic Church learned from the experience in Florida in the period just before and after the Spanish American War when the Spanish speaking Catholics had to deal with a clergy & sisters from Ireland who knew no Spanish.

The Church is universal, not Latino/Hispanic. Attempts to make the Church put on one face will backfire, as have all the other efforts. Leave the Church alone. If you do not like the practices; find another church or way to express your faith. You will not push the rest of us out to take what we have built in the American Church

Excellent report on the changes that are coming to the Catholic Church in the US and also pointing to the changes facing culture in the US as a whole. It is interesting that this report came from Chicago and shows what a strong influence Hispanics are having there. As we get more Spanish speaking priests the Church will be able to better minister to this growing population.
