One Nation: Religion & Politics
Archbishop Donald Wuerl: Charity and Freedom of Conscience

On December 1, the District of Columbia City Council is scheduled to vote on the Religious Freedom and Marriage Equality Amendment Act, which would legalize same-sex marriage. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington has said that if the measure–which is subject to Congressional review–takes effect, its social service partnerships with the DC government may have to stop. (The Archdiocese refuses to place children with gay parents in foster care and adoptions, and it and would not pay spousal benefits to same-sex employees.) Watch Washington’s Archbishop Donald Wuerl on November 20 describing his church’s position.

Sad, very, very sad. He was one of my philosophy professors at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. At the time, I found him brillant. It is a shame that he is wasting his talents on defending positions based on estrangement of peoples and conscious denial of the truth. Just one more party player that has no choice but to perpetuate the antiquated model of the church, or face the consequences.

I am glad that the church is firmly standing on scripture as authoritative. I only wish that they would take a firmer stance against all sexual immorality. I remember what a demoralizing and hope destroying effect the divorces of many of my freinds parents had on me when I was growing up … I can hardly imagine the total confusion which the current situation in this nation may be having on our children as they try to form their identities. Truth has been devalued and sneered at and we are reaping the consequences. May G-d have mercy upon us and our children.

Thank You for defending the teachings of our church and for not being one of those so called Catholics who picks and chooses what they like and don’t like.

I totally agree with Bishop Michael J. Champion. The church needs to open its eyes and face reality. The church does not have a good track record of protecting children. It is so sad we have an all male hierarchy making decisions about marriage and family when they have never been married nor do they solict the opinion of women in their policy making decisions that affects families and children. Remember it was not the sinners nor the poor common people who crucified Jesus. It was the scholars and men in power who were threatend by his ideas.

I am wondering if the Bishop is aware of the number of gay priests we have in the Church?
I think we have many. They say Mass, give the sacraments, live in parishes and are much loved.
A friend of mine is a priest who is gay and I think he is a very good and holy man.
The bishop is living in the 50’s – that type of Catholism should be long gone.
