Edward Teach, alias Blackbeard, was the most notorious pirate of his day. At the height of his rein, he commanded a fleet of four ships and a crew of 400 men. They were ruthless seafaring raiders who terrorizing vessels in American waters. In 1718, Blackbeard even blockaded the city of Charleston, crippling its economy. Eventually he was caught and beheaded by a posse from the Royal Navy. Now, 300 years later, a marine archaeology team believe they have found his sunken flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, off the North Carolina coast. The remains of the shipwreck are helping solve the most enduring mystery surrounding the infamous pirate captain – did he accidentally run his ship aground, or was it a deliberate plot to betray his crew and cheat them out of their share of the plunder?

This was a great show! Loved the coast guard part…okay well mainly because it was my brother who was interviewed! anyway…glad that the coast guard got some recognition!

Who was Blackbeard?
Midway during the show they measure lines on the hull used to determine keel depth. They find the distance between two of these to be 12.75 inches, indicating it is not an English foot, rather a French foot. This discrepancy also has created the myth of Napoleon being short, he was 5′6″, the 5′2″ height was in old French measurements. In fact PBS got this wrong on the recent Napoleon drama. If you do serious reading you find even the best video history is always full of mythology, always keep that in mind.
Roy Mette, an English musician has recorded a CD of Pirate songs which are available on the iTunes Music Store. One of the self-penned songs is about Black Beard. You might enjoy the music as well as the historical references to Black Beard and numerous other pirates.

One could possibly say that his crew knew he was going to downsize, many of them probably realized that he needed to get rid of the flagship, thus volunteering to surrender with the downed ship since they would be pardoned anyway.

The program mentions a few times that the ship that Black Beard hijacked and confiscated was the French ship, La Concorde, and then he renamed it, Queen Anne’s Revenge.
It’s spelled “reign”.
