Near the fabled Pompeii is Herculaneum, another city buried and frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Herculaneum Uncovered follows geo-archaeologists as they unearth precious artifacts that reveal what life was like before the eruption, and how the volcano devastated the town in a very different manner to Pompeii.

This is so interesting. I have had an interest in Herculaneum and Pompeii ever since grade 7 when I did a report on Vesusius. Thanks for all the interesting facts found!

Herculaneum Uncovered was very interesting to watch. I would like to learn more. Thanks for airing it last night. Look forward to more interesting shows like that.

Excellent Show. I truly enjoyed this Feature, and was amazed by what they have found. I’ve always wondered about Pompeii, but was never aware of Herculaneum. Thank You.

I caught only portions of this show, but found what I saw deeply inspiring. My knowledge of Pompeii was very limited and I had not heard of Herculaneum. The underlying questions of mortality and mass extinction (for a community) can be frightening, but I found such details as the fresco painters mid-work and their lasting art very life-affirming. Thank you.

I, like many others had never heard of Herculaneum until I recently read the book,”Blind Alley”, by Iris Johansen. Also, since my granddaughter will be visiting the site of Pompeii on the 17th of June, I am so very interested in learning all I can about BOTH places. My granddaughter has not mentioned Herculaneum. I will certainly tell her about it. Please run this show again, as I missed it the first time. Could you let me know if this is possible and when you would show it again and the time and channel? Thank you so very much.

My partner and I returned just a few days ago from a vacation in Italy, and we decided to visit Herculaneum (instead of Pompeii) because of having seen the PBS special just before we left for vacation. The special was a great introduction to the city, its history and fate, and its inhabitants. Just as the special pointed out, the quality of the mosaics, frescoes, and architecture were simply amazing. Thanks to PBS, I was able to appreciate the visit even more than I would have without the orientation it provided.

Several years ago, I watched a tv-documentary on Herculaneum. They discussed one building, in particular, which is still 2/3 under lava rock and under excavation… could be a library? They show a computerized rendition of what this building would look like now with Herculaneum’s original coastline. There were open archways and the building was situated right on the coast. Any idea what this building is/was?
