Many
CDFIs lend to small businesses. Usually the goals for such lending
include creating job opportunities in the community and providing
income and building wealth for the small-business owner. In many
cases, the lender has additional criteria, such as lending to
women-owned businesses, minority-owned businesses, or cooperatively
owned businesses. In some regions, lenders try to help people
who have been caught in economic dislocation caused by changes
in international competition or in the availability of natural
resources on which an industry depends.
