HOME WORLD EVENTS   Thomas Eakins painted scenes from modern life at a time when modern life was evolving at a breathtaking pace. During Eakins' lifetime the United States doubled in physical size. The population of the country doubled. The number of foreign-born immigrants, industrial workers, and white collar workers doubled, as did the divorce rate, the suicide rate and the gross national product. Eakins witnessed the assassination of three presidents, and the impeachment of another. Congress entertained twelve new amendments to the Constitution, seven of which became law. During his lifetime, the world experienced remarkable advances in science, industry, and technology. America was a place of new discoveries and new frontiers.
