With its 2,000 miles of coastline, hundreds of rivers flowing
from the mountains to the sea and thousands of lakes dotting
the landscape, much of the life, sustenance and culture of Vietnam
takes place by water. In fact, in Vietnamese, "water" and "nation"
are the same word. FRONTLINE/World offers a glimpse at
the liquid side of life in Vietnam.
HaLong Bay
HaLong
Bay, or the "place where the dragon descends into the
sea," is located in northeastern Vietnam and is part of
the Gulf of Tonkin. The bay consists of more than a thousand
islands and islets and is home to several archaeological
sites that hold evidence of the earliest traces of human
existence. UNESCO considers HaLong Bay, with its dramatic
limestone pillars and great biological diversity, a world
heritage site.
