HIV/AIDS Across Time
• AIDS first emerged in the 1980s.
• By the early 1990s AIDS had spread worldwide,
and by 1993 there were more than 14 million estimated cases
around the world.
• In 1993, there were 9 million estimated HIV/AIDS
cases in Sub-Saharan Africa
• Sub-Saharan Africa remained the epicenter of
the AIDs epidemic throughout the 1990s.
• By 2001, Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 70
percent of the world's total number of reported cases of AIDS/HIV.
• Since 2000, the number of HIV infections has
exploded in India, China and Russia.
• In the 21st century, the epicenter of HIV/AIDS
may be in China, India and Russia.
It is projected that by 2010, 40 million people in India,
China and Russia will be infected -- equal to the current total
world HIV/AIDS population -- which would mean that half of the
world's total HIV/AIDS population would live in China, India
and Russia.
