As painter and former student Wolf Kahn recalls, “What Hofmann would do with a tube of paint, I’ve never seen anybody else do. Instead of unscrewing the cap and squeezing the pigment out that way, he’d take a pair of scissors, cut the bottom off, and then squeeze all the paint out of the tube from the bottom in a fat, thick stream. “
Indeed, Hofmann’s characteristic joie de vivre shines through brightly in his paintings: most notably through his vibrant color choices, but also in his liberal use of the pigment itself.
