Alaska's diverse and complex
history is perhaps best understood community by community,
town by town. There is no "typical" Alaskan city, no single
spot on the state map that exemplifies every Alaskan
issue.
As the following profiles show,
Alaska's far-flung settlements have many elements in common,
but many divergent aspects as well. In looking at these
profiles you will see how the themes that the Harriman
Expedition once pondered -- urban/native divide, species
decline, environmental conservation and resource development
-- continue to be central landmarks on the Alaskan political
landscape. Click on the name of a
community on the map or listed below to visit
twelve unique Alaskan communities along the
Harriman Expedition Retraced route.
