Ohio State University issued a warning Monday morning that there was an active shooter on campus and students should "Run Hide Fight." Early during the attack, witnesses reported hearing gunshots, but in the end the attacker did not use a firearm.
Eight people were transported to the hospital. Injuries included stab wounds and person who was hit by a car during the attack. None of those taken to the hospital had life-threatening injuries, according to the Associated Press. A spokesman for the university said the attacker had been shot and killed.
The assailant was identified as Somali-born Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a student at the school. The Islamic State group on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack, calling Artan a "soldier" of their organization. Authorities were looking for evidence that it was a terrorist act.
As of 11:30 a.m. ET, the Ohio State University Twitter account announced the order to shelter in place had been lifted.
This followed the earlier orders for students to shelter in place.
