Student reporters highlight the struggles and triumphs of ‘New Americans’

Nation

In October, PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs asked its network of video journalism programs across the country to find stories about immigration in their local communities.

The result is New Americans, more than 30 videos highlighting the struggles and triumphs of recent arrivals and their families.

Stories include: a conversation club in a Louisville, KY library that connects residents to new arrivals; a tour of Houston's food trucks; one Georgia middle school girl's decision to wear the hijab; how music and sports ease the loneliness of arriving in a new country; how Reagan's amnesty enabled a Nicaraguan immigrant to become a successful American educator; a Sudanese refugee's journey to Salt Lake City; the predicament of DACA students and much much more.

NewsHour guest anchor Audie Cornish introduced a highlight reel of the series.
