The White House said Tuesday that President Joe Biden has approved emergency disaster declarations for Illinois and Tennessee in addition to the major disaster declaration he approved for Kentucky following the devastating tornadoes that ravaged the region last week, killing dozens.

The declarations provide federal aid for search and rescue and cleanup operations, as well as aid for temporary housing and to help individuals and businesses recover.

Speaking at the White House briefing, press secretary Jen Psaki said FEMA has also sent "dozens of generators to Kentucky, along with 135,000 gallon liters of water, 74,000 meals and thousands of cots, blankets, infant toddler kits and pandemic shelter kits to support the people" in the region.

Biden plans to travel to Kentucky on Wednesday to survey the damage firsthand and offer federal support for the victims.

Psaki also commented on the series of frantic texts from Republican lawmakers and others sent to Donald Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows as the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection was underway.

The texts were released this week by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack and read aloud at a committee hearing by Rep. Liz Cheney.

Psaki called the texts "disappointing" but "not surprising."

"Some of the very same individuals who were willing to warn, condemn and express horror over what happened on January 6th in private were totally, in private, were totally silent in public or even worse, we're spreading lies and conspiracy theories and continue to since that time," she said.

Finally, Psaki discussed the next diplomatic steps between the White House and Russia following President Joe Biden's conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week amid an escalating crisis on the Ukraine border.

She said U.S. Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Dr. Karen Donfried, is in Moscow speaking directly with senior Russian officials and underscoring the U.S. "commitment to help resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine."

Psaki called it "a good sign that there are diplomatic engagements and discussions that are continuing, including with Russian leaders and officials. Ukrainians and our European partners."
