German police killed a gunman after he opened fire in a movie theater in the town of Viernheim, according to German newspaper Bild.
Reports said that the shooter, who arrived at the theater around 3 p.m. local time, barricaded himself there after firing his weapon, taking hostages. He appeared to be "heavily armed," according to German reports.
Germany's interior minister said at approximately 4 p.m. local time that the shooter had been shot and killed. Initially, another German outlet said that as many as 50 people might have been injured. Bild reported that the survivors were injured from tear gas, not by the gunman. Reuters later tweeted that there were no injuries.
The theater is located at the Kinopolis complex, a shopping center that hosts more than 20,000 people a day, in Viernheim, Germany, in the western part of the country. Viernheim is approximately 45 miles from Frankfurt.
