Britain's King Charles III addressed the Welsh parliament, called the Senedd, on Friday after receiving its condolences on the death last week of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The King, who as the Prince of Wales had often used a smattering of Welsh in official speeches after taking lessons, gave his speech in Welsh and English.

He said he felt "immense gratitude for the privilege" of serving for decades as Prince of Wales, the title traditionally bestowed on the heir to the throne. His eldest son, Prince William, now has that title.

The king and Camilla, the queen consort, were greeted by cheering crowds in Cardiff.

Schoolchildren squealed with excitement and waved Welsh flags, the crowds cheered, and there were shouts of "God save the king" as the royal couple greeted well-wishers.

Charles returns to London later Friday and will briefly stand vigil at his mother's coffin in the evening with his siblings, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
