WTA suspends tournaments in China over treatment of tennis star Peng Shuai

President Biden predicted that store shelves would be well-stocked for the holidays, and he said that inflation will cool as pandemic disruptions ease. But, at a congressional hearing, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said it's not certain that prices will ease in the second half of next year.

Deeper look at Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai : The WTA (Women's Tennis Association) is suspending all tournaments in China over concerns about the player Peng Shuai. She has largely dropped out of view after accusing Zhang Gaoli, China’s former top official, of sexual assault. On Wednesday, the WTA said there's still serious doubt that Peng is safe and free of government coercion.

On Nov. 2, the former Wimbledon doubles champion described the incident over a popular social media platform which the government promptly deleted. Peng then disappeared from public view and so far has not issued any public statement. China's state-controlled media released several strange videos and images showing Peng was safe, but many including the WTA, remained worried. To learn more, watch this NewsHour story here .
