Decades after Title IX, young women face tough battles on and off the sports field

Summary

It’s been nearly 50 years since the passage of Title IX, the landmark civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at federally funded schools, including in athletic programs. But violations still exist, with schools often providing better opportunities and benefits for young men's sports. Amna Nawaz takes a look at one San Diego-area high school team that fought to settle the score.

Five Facts

  • When did title IX first become law?
  • How has Title IX transformed women's sports?
  • Why do unequal resources for sports continue to exist despite Title IX?
