Buffalo shooting: How we can respond to white nationalist violence

Summary

Federal authorities are investigating the massacre in a Buffalo supermarket as a potential hate crime as communities in the area mourn the 10 lives that were lost, all of whom were Black. This attack, like too many before it, is leading to another period of conversation and self-examination for some on questions of race, white supremacy and extremist ideology. Key terms :
  • Antisemitism : hostility to, prejudice towards and discrimination against Jewish people.
  • White supremacy : the broad racist ideology that white people are inherently superior or more deserving of power than other races.
  • White nationalism : an expression of white supremacy that reflects the belief that a country (i.e. the U.S.) is fundamentally intended for white people.
Directions : After the first video is shown (we recommend watching until 4m:21s) teachers may ask students the following questions. For a deeper conversation, you may then want to view this discussion (start at 0m:31s, end at 4m:54s) between Eric Ward of the Southern Poverty Law Center and Jelani Cobb, the next dean of the Columbia Journalism School, about white nationalism in America. Follow along with the transcript here .

Five Facts

  • Who is the gunman? When and where did the shooting occur?
  • What is the Great Replacement Theory? How did it fuel the gunman’s purpose in conducting this shooting?
  • Why do these racist attacks continue to occur? Do you think that hate crimes similar to this one will happen again in the future?
  • How can we ensure that we effectively combat targeted racial violence?

Focus Questions

In the second video above , Jelani Cobb said that “We will mourn, we will grieve and, eventually, we will recede back into the same sorts of habitual behaviors that facilitated this in the first place.” What do you think he means by this? What examples of “habitual behaviors” can you think of that foster white supremacist beliefs? Media literacy : Think about how the shooter utilized a live streaming platform to showcase this horrific act of terror. What role does media play in the accessibility of racist ideologies? Do you think the easier access to media leads to such ideologies becoming mainstream? If so, is there something that can be done about it without limiting people's abilities to share information?
