What we learned on Day 7 of the Jan. 6 committee hearings

Summary

The Jan. 6 committee held its seventh public hearing Tuesday afternoon with a focus on connections between extremist groups and the Trump White House. The hearing ended with a dramatic revelation that former President Trump recently called a witness the panel was talking to, an action referred to the Justice Department. For a transcript of the story, click here. If time is short, we recommend watching the first part of the video which stops at 6m:07 .

Five Facts

  • Who was in the meeting that was reviewed on Day 7 of the Jan. 6 hearings?
  • How did Derek Lyons describe the meeting?
  • Which of the participants were current staffers of former President Donald Trump?
  • What did Brad Parscale text Katrina Pierson after she said, "It wasn't the rhetoric"?
  • When did former President Donald Trump tweet what could be interpreted as a call to arms and encourage his followers to protest on Jan. 6?

Focus Questions

Vice Chair Liz Cheney said former President Trump called a witness before that witness was scheduled to meet with the committee. Why is such a call concerning to committee members? Media literacy : The testimony of Jason Van Tatanhove, a former spokesman for the Oath Keepers, is included in the beginning of this short video. Even though Tatanhove was not in the meeting that was discussed, why might PBS include what he said? Who are the Oath Keepers, and what was Tatanhove’s connection to the hearing?

For More

  • Watch a portion of the full hearing and pay close attention to the style of congressional hearings. What questions are asked, and by whom? Does the recording of the full hearing tell a different story than the shorter summary?
  1. Watch the PBS NewsHour report on Day 6 of the Jan. 6 hearing. What were the main takeaways from that hearing, and how did they add to understanding about the events of Jan. 6?
