REUTERS/Sarah Silbiger What students can do : Take a look at this data tool by NBC News which shows the average grocery store prices for metro areas across the U.S. Click on the dropdown menu and find the area closest to you. Ask a family member if they have noticed an increase in prices at the supermarket on some of the foods listed, like orange juice, bacon and bread. Have they cut back on buying certain foods? Ask them if they remember another time where food prices also went up and how they dealt with it then. Take a look at this article written in December 2021 by the Food Institute (trade publication for those who work in the food industry) to see how rural areas are affected by recent price increases: "A recent Bank of America analysis also emphasized how lower-income and rural people are being disproportionately affected by inflation. Rural Americans have seen their spending power drop 5.2% on an annualized basis, compared with 3.5% for urban households, the research found."
