Part of the San Andreas Fault system, the Calaveras Fault branches off the San Andreas near Hollister, Calif., and extends north to Mt. Diablo for about 100 miles. The fault is considered a right-lateral strike slip with most of the movement along the fault occurring at 10 mm to 12 mm per year. The last earthquake to rupture the Calaveras measured 6.2 on the Richter scale and occurred in 1984 along the Morgan Hill section of the fault.
