About SciGirls

SciGirls is a show for kids ages 8-12, showcasing bright, curious, real tween girls putting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to work in their everyday lives. In each half hour episode you’ll meet a new group of girls, whose eagerness to find answers to their questions will inspire your children to explore the world around them and discover that science and technology are everywhere!

While we meet new girls in each episode, the animated characters Izzie and her best friend Jake appear every time. Together, they embark on their own adventures and call on the SciGirls for help. Viewers follow Izzie as she goes onto the website where she selects a project that will help her conquer her challenge. She launches the project video and follows the SciGirls live-action story, learning as she watches.

Each episode goes beyond science “factoids” to highlight the process of science and engineering. Girls can see how choosing, questioning, planning, predicting, observing, interpreting and communicating actually take place. They learn how rewarding and fun it is to do science and engineering with your peers, and the show’s female mentors offer girls a glimpse of exciting STEM career possibilities.

The goal of SciGirls is nothing less than changing how millions of girls think about science, technology, engineering and math! Every girl can be a SciGirl!

The backbone of each SciGirls episode is the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that drive each project. SciGirls focuses on the process of investigation and not always the end result. While every experiment isn’t perfect, each episode showcases important characteristics of a STEM project: teamwork, challenges, problem solving, freedom to express ideas and giving/receiving support along the way. SciGirls also models important science process skills as girls set out to: predict, observe, measure, classify, experiment, record, interpret, graph and communicate. These skills are at the heart of both the scientific and engineering design processes.

In addition, our entire SciGirls approach—the TV show, website, outreach and educational activities—is rooted in what research has revealed about how to engage girls in STEM. A quarter of a century of studies have converged on a set of common strategies that work, and these have become the foundation of SciGirls.
