Film summary

Mumbai fishermen Rakesh and Ganesh are inheritors of the great Koli knowledge system—a way to harvest the sea by following the moon and the tides. Rakesh has kept faith in traditional fishing methods while Ganesh has embraced technology. Against the Tide is the tale of two men’s bond fractured by the weight of a changing world and a sea threatened by climate change. A Co-Presentation with CAAM (Center for Asian American Media).

Introduction

This guide is an invitation to dialogue. It is based on a belief in the
power of human connection and designed for people who want
to use Against the Tide to engage family, friends, classmates,
colleagues, and communities. In contrast to initiatives that foster
debates in which participants try to convince others that they are
right, this document envisions conversations undertaken in a spirit
of openness in which people try to understand one another and
expand their thinking by sharing viewpoints and listening actively.

The discussion prompts are intentionally crafted to help a wide
range of audiences think more deeply about the issues in the film.
Rather than attempting to address them all, choose one or two that
best meet your needs and interests. And be sure to leave time to
consider taking action. Planning next steps can help people leave
the room feeling energized and optimistic, even in instances when
conversations have been difficult.

About the Author, Neelima Vallangi

Neelima Vallangi is an independent climate journalist
and documentary filmmaker from India, currently based
in Nepal. Her work has been published in The Guardian,
Deutsche Welle, Smithsonian, Al Jazeera English, BBC,
South China Morning Post etc. With a keen interest in
nature and mountain ecosystems, she specialises in
unique stories and in-depth features from the Himalayan
region and Indian subcontinent. Deeply inspired by
the many months spent among the lofty peaks of the
Himalaya over the last 15 years, the unprecedented
changes taking place in the high mountains moved her
to start covering climate change. She currently builds on
that formative experience to report for news publications,
write books and direct films on the emerging challenges
of climate change and associated environmental and
cultural shifts in these least-reported regions.
